الوصف
This study concentrates on transferring cultural-specific items (CSIs) from Arabic into English, relying on a Libyan literary novel (Al-Domia) of Al-Koni, with its English translation (The Puppet) by Hutchins. This dissertation aims to present some difficulties that a translator may face in the process of translation, based on Newmark's model (1988). Newmark described his five cultural categories : ecology, material culture, social culture, organizations, gestures and habits. The focus of the analysis will be firstly on finding cultural items, secondly on classifying the cultural aspects, and finally on identifying the translation procedures employed by the translator to fill the cultural gaps according to Newark's model. This dissertation hypothesizes that the translator adopts Newmark's procedures to fill the cultural gaps : transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, componential analysis, synonymy, through-translation, recognized translation, translation label ,compensation, paraphrase, couplet, triplet, literal translation, expansion, omission and finally notes. Although there are different ways and methods for translating CSIs, here the study shows that the translator sometimes cannot find appropriate corresponding equivalents for them in the TT. The results indicate that among different domains such as ecology, material culture, social culture, organizations, gesture and habits, the terms related to the domains of ecology culture (like flora, fauna) and material culture (like food, clothes) occur more frequently than those in other domains. The analysis of examples in this research suggests that among all procedures, the translator, in most cases has used general words (literal translation)
