| dc.description | Golden paintbrush (Castilleja levisecta) is an herbaceous perennial plant endemic to the grasslands of the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. Historically, golden paintbrush populations existed between the Willamette Valley of Oregon north to British Columbia, generally on south-west facing coastal prairies with sandy, well-drained soils of glacial origin (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2000). Natural populations no longer exist in Oregon and the species is extirpated. | |
| dc.description.abstract | Golden paintbrush grows and thrives during the warm months of the year. Flowering will typically start in late April/ May, with fruit maturing by June. When drought conditions are prevalent the plant will remain dormant until the next growing season (Douglas & Ryan, 1999). Golden paintbrush is a facultative hemi-parasite or parasitic plant. Roots of golden paintbrush are capable of forming haustoria to connect to roots of other plants. | |
