Diabetic disease is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Two major forms of diabetes were identified; type-1 and type-2. Lack of or severe reduction in insulin secretion due to autoimmune or viral destructions of β cells is responsible for type-1 diabetes mellitus, which accounts for 5-10% of diabetic patients. The more prevalent form, type-2 diabetes mellitus, accounts for more than 90% of cases [1]. Type-2 diabetes mellitus usually begins as insulin resistance, a disorder in which the cells do not use insulin properly. [2].
Sialic acid (SA), a generic term for a family of acetylated derivatives of neuraminic acid, is an essential component of glycoprotein's and glycolipids. In patients with type-2 diabetes the levels of sialic acid are increased [3].
Serum sialic acid is a component of cell membranes and elevated levels may indicate excessive cell membrane damage, more specific to the cells of the vascular tissue leading to conditions like retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy [4]. Serum sialic acid is newly established potential risk factor for the development of diabetic nephropathy [5].
