The findings revealed that most EFL undergraduate students made morpho-syntactic errors. Moreover, the analysis of teachers’ interviews showed that the main causes of these errors were: Lack of practice and feedback, impact of first language and overgeneralization of L2 rules, weakness of the curriculum given, lack of students’ focus in the process of writing, and direct translation.
This study aims to identify the common morpho-syntactic errors made by Libyan EFL undergraduate students in their written English. It also aims to identify the reasons behind these errors in order to enhance writing instructors’ awareness about the importance of developing students’ understanding of morpho-syntactic structures. The study includes 58 undergraduate students enrolled in the third and fourth year in Libyan universities in Tripoli. The data were collected by using a two-parts test (morphological and syntactic parts) for the students and a structured interview for the teachers. The students’ errors were classified into 17 different morpho-syntactic categories and analyzed using the four analysis steps organized by Huang (2002).
