Speaking plays a significant role in the future of the students and education-al process. In spite of its importance, speaking has long been the neglected skill in second language teaching, especially in the secondary schools.
This current study aims to investigate the problems encountered by Libyan students in learning speaking skill at the first year of the secondary schools. The research answers the three main questions imposed by the study to in-vestigate the main causes behind these problems.
The data were collected via two methods; the classroom observation and teachers’ interview. It is analyzed statistically via SPSS and the results that obtained from the study were discussed, compared and contrasted with the previous relevant studies that have been conducted recently in order to re-veal the contribution that this study has added to the field of learning and teaching EFL in Libya.
The results have proved that the students face problems that have been hypothesized by the study such as: (1) the method and strategy which are used by the majority of the teacher are not suitable for teaching speaking skill, (2) all the secondary schools are suffering from the lack of the teaching aids, (3) both teachers and students used the Arabic language instead of English in the class most of the time, (4) students’ participation was very rare, (5) students do not have the motivation to express themselves they were fearful of criticism.
At the end, the study presents the conclusion and suggests a number of recommendations for further studies concerning improving and developing speaking skills
