The main function of the electricity grid is to provide the electrical power to the customer with a reasonable degree of quality. The reliability of the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, which is used to control and monitors the power grid, is the most important characteristic that determines the quality of the power grid. This thesis presents the reliability analysis of TRCC (Tripoli regional control center) SCADA system by qualitative and quantitative evaluation of its major layers. FTA (Fault Tree Analysis) technique used to assess the reliability through two approaches: First, comparing the reliability of various substation automation architectures then the most reliable architecture among those architectures is chosen. Secondly, evaluate the reliability of a main station in multi-modes: semi-ideal mode and current situation modes. In the first one, we assumed that there are no communication problems and all the substations are connected to the control center. In the current situation mode, we took into account the communication problems between the substations and control center. Finally, the proposed scheme was executed to substitute RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) system by DCS (Digital Control Systems) in twenty substations and the impact of these changes was evaluated on the reliability of the TRCC SCADA system.
