Social media has been used in the education system for a long time as a teaching and learning tool. Given the fact that SM is considered a necessary tool for some people’s daily routines, implementing SM in EFL classrooms helps university instructors facilitate the teaching process. This study intends to investigate the perceptions and attitudes of EFL university teachers towards using SM in their classrooms; in addition to revealing the challenges faced. A qualitative research design was adapted, open-ended questionnaires were delivered to thirteen Libyan university teachers from different universities in Libya, and semi-structured interviews were carried out with six of the teachers. The data gathered were analysed thematically. The results revealed that Libyan university teachers perceive using social media in EFL classrooms as a tool facilitating teaching and learning. Additionally, social media usage encouraged teachers to develop their technology skills and enhance their communication skills, especially with their students. However, results also outlined that using social media in EFL classrooms cause some challenges related to students, teachers, education, and technology. Keywords: social media, EFL, teachers' perceptions, attitudes, English skills
