Heavy metals are defined as those metals that have a specific density greater than 5 g/cm3 and have adverse effects on both the environment and organisms (Järup, 2003). When existing at low concentrations, these metals are essential for the maintenance of a variety of physiological and biochemical functions in organisms; nevertheless, when these quantities exceed a certain threshold, they become toxic. Even though heavy metal exposure is known to have multiple adverse health effects that persist over time, heavy metal exposure is still occurring and becoming worse in many regions of the world. Heavy metals are major environmental contaminants. The toxicity of heavy metals is a problem that is becoming increasingly significant for ecological, nutritional, evolutionary, and environmental reasons (Jaishankar et al., 2014).
Natural and anthropogenic sources both release Cd into the environment. Naturally, it is mixed with other elements like oxygen (cadmium oxide), sulfur (cadmium sulfide), chlorine (cadmium chloride), it is also a byproduct of various metal treatment processes (lead, copper, iron, etc.) Volcanic activities, forest fires, and rock seepage-into the water from rocks, are all examples considered as natural sources of Cd (Chatterjee et al., 2017). However, there are numerous anthropogenic sources, including coal-burning, plant air, various pesticides and fertilizers, metals mining, wood preservatives, waste incineration, fuel combustion, and industrial processes like smelting, welding, paints, plastics, and battery manufacturing (Marg, 2011). An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 metrictons of Cd are released into the environment annually in the United States, according to the Agency of Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR, 1999).
