الوصف
Heavy metals are defined as those metals that have a specific density greater than 5
g/cm3 and have adverse effects on both the environment and organisms (Järup, 2003). When
existing at low concentrations, these metals are essential for the maintenance of a variety of
physiological and biochemical functions in organisms; nevertheless, when these quantities
exceed a certain threshold, they become toxic. Even though heavy metal exposure is known
to have multiple adverse health effects that persist over time, heavy metal exposure is still
occurring and becoming worse in many regions of the world. Heavy metals are major
environmental contaminants. The toxicity of heavy metals is a problem that is becoming
increasingly significant for ecological, nutritional, evolutionary, and environmental reasons
(Jaishankar et al., 2014).
