This dissertation examines the way the 17 prepositions beginning with ‘at’ in Pearl S. Buck’s The Good Earth (1931) are translated in each of Munir Ba‘labaki and Ibrahim Iskandar’s translation of the aforementioned novel. It starts with a brief presentation of the uses of English prepositions, on the one hand, and the Arabic modules which often replace the function of preposition in Arabic, on the other. The analysis compares the translators’ different renderings of the 17 English prepositions beginning with ‘at’, identifies the translation similarities and differences, indicates the prepositions’ domains of use (spatial, temporal, area, or state), and points at where prepositions are subrogated by other Arabic modulations (for the sake of meaning).
We have found that Munir Ba‘labaki and Ibrahim Iskandar have resorted to other syntactic modules to translate the Prepositions as subject, verb, additive, adjective, attributive, absolute object, specification, adverbial object, condition, or modified noun. Ibrahim Iskandarhas, moreover, had chosen to amputate the sentence including the preposition (in 12 out of 68 cases) or ignore the translation of the preposition (in 13 out of 68 cases).
