This study aims to investigate the attitudes of Libyan EFL teachers towards using technology specifically smartphones in teaching EFL students as well as exploring the ways in which smartphones are used by the Libyan EFL learners for developing their English language skills. It has the objectives of finding out the purpose and frequency of using smartphones by the Libyan EFL learners for developing their language skills. The samples of this study were 100 students and 10 teachers from the department of English, Faculty of Arts, Sebha University, Libya. In order to collect the required data, the researcher administered questionnaires to learners and conducted a telephone interview with teachers. The findings of this study showed that most of the participants including teachers and learners have positive attitudes towards using smartphones for teaching and learning English and most of the students who participated in this study use their smartphones for developing language learning skills for various study purposes. The study has certain implications both for the Libyan EFL teachers and learners which can be used as a guideline of how smartphones can be fully incorporated into EFL classrooms to enhance learners’ engagement. It is suggested that the use of smartphones in learning a foreign language can be considered as an ideal solution for making English language learning effective, creative, fun, easy, and motivational.
