In order to investigate the effect of CO2 injection pressure and concentration on asphaltene precipitation, three limestone core samples were used to represent reservoir formation during displacement test. The results show that by increasing the pore volume of the injected CO2, asphaltene precipitation increases, also the increase in injection pressure causes less precipitation of asphaltene. It is found that the precipitated asphaltene can reduce permeability, porosity and alter the wettability of the core samples.
The deposition of asphaltene is considered to be one of the most difficult problems during oil production. The presence of asphaltene in crude oil and consequently adsorption and deposition of asphaltene on the surface of the rocks has some effects on the properties of rock such as porosity, permeability and wettability. Asphaltene can precipitate during primary oil recovery, CO2 injection, and hydrocarbon gas injection. Asphaltene precipitates may deposit to the surface of pores or plug the pore throat causing permeability reduction, wettability alteration and formation damage. In this research asphaltene deposition problem during natural depletion and dynamic displacement of oil by CO2 in two different porous media is experimentally inspected. Two different rock samples (limestone and sandstone) from Libyan reservoirs are used as a representative of porous media.
