BACKGROUND: The chemotherapeutic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is an anti-cancer drug used to inhibit the proliferation of many different tumor cells including tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC). However, the standard doses of this drug cause adverse side effects on normal tissues which seriously affect the quality of a patient’s life. Oleuropein (OLEU), is a natural compound, that has been mentioned to have inhibitory effects on various cancers and its combination with other chemotherapeutic drugs was reported to allow significantly lower doses. AIM: The main objective of this study was to assess the cytotoxic effect of OLEU and the chemotherapeutic drug 5-FU on TSCC cell line (HNO-97) and human normal oral epithelial cell line (OEC) by either using each drug separately or in combination.
