Following an outage, it is important to restore the power system as fast and secure as possible in order to limit the social and economical consequences for the population. In order to be able to do this it is necessary to have a sufficient knowledge of how a power system operates during a restoration phase. Here the behaviour of system components and system automatics is of particular signicance. A proper restoration policy with clear guidelines and instructions for the personnel involved is also of a vital importance.In recent years, due to economic competition and deregulation, power systems are operated closer and closer to their limits. At the same time, power systems have increased in size and complexity. Both factors increase the risk of major blackout, it is reported that the impact of a blackout increases exponentially with the duration of system restoration.
