Signal distortion caused by the poor amplitude and phase response characteristic of the channel leads to pulses representing different digital codes to interfere with each other (Inter-Symbol interference); making it difficult to detect the codes reliably at the receiving end. To compensate for the channel distortion, which may be varying with time or of unknown characteristic at the receiving end, adaptive equalization is used.An adaptive filter is essentially a digital filter with self-adjusting characteristic. It adapts, automatically, to changes in its input signals.
