Food consumption had been identified as the major pathway of human exposure to heavy metals, accounting for more than 90% compared to other ways of exposure such as inhalation and dermal contact. Hence, the accumulation of heavy metals in the environment is increasing concern due to the food safety issues and potential health risks. Plants are important components of ecosystems as they transfer elements from a biotic into biotic environments. The primary sources of elements from the environment to plants are: air, water and the soil.
