The proposed optimized LBP (OLBP) calculates the local differences of the center pixel with its
surrounding. The patterns captured by the proposed optimized LBP address the property of the
chest images embodied in straight lines that pass by the center pixel. The optimized LBP reduces
the size of the original LBP descriptor, from 8-bits to 4-bits, which in turn reduces the space and
time complexity required to calculate the underlying descriptor. The optimized LBP has gained
other advantages such as the insensitivity to noise, preserving the image information and
insensitivity to illumination.
