The disease is transmitted through the bites of
infected sand flies Phlebotomus species in the Old World and Lutzomyia
species in the New World—which carry the parasites responsible for
causing either cutaneous or visceral forms of leishmaniasis in humans and
other vertebrates(Roque & Jansen, 2014).
