| dc.description | hough the next waves of feminist movements differ in their objectives, their main aim is to fulfil and ensure that there is justice for women in the different aspects of life and reduce the oppression and inequality. Oppression of women can be found in almost every society; however, colonized societies faced a deeper level of gender oppression as women became a tool used for power. As a result, postcolonial feminism has emerged as a result of the colonial period. It focuses heavily on the overlapping of gender and race with the experience of women in the colonized societies. | |
| dc.description.abstract | The thesis explores postcolonial feminism, and the challenges women face in non-Western countries through Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Purple Hibiscus (2003). Drawing attention to the goals and aspects of postcolonial feminism and the methods they undertook in dismantling the oppression of women in postcolonial countries which are according to the chosen novels, Jamaica in the Caribbean Islands and Nigeria. Though these countries gained their independence from the colonizers, the impact of colonization outlasted longer, destroying the colonized societies on both economic and social levels. | |
