The global distribution of chronic liver disease shows marked regional variation, largely reflecting differences in exposure to viral, metabolic, and environmental risk factors (Setiawan et al., 2016). In low- and middle-income countries, chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections remain the dominant causes of CLD, while in high-income countries, the increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes has made non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) the leading contributor (Younossi et al., 2019).
Millions of people worldwide suffer from liver disease, making it a serious global health problem. The discovery of trustworthy biomarkers for early identification and prognosis is necessary due to the significant clinical problems posed by the progression of chronic liver disease (CLD) to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study looked at a number of biomarkers, such as glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), and its diagnostic and prognostic potential (Cong et al.,2024).
