dc.descriptionthe deficiency of life cycle cost analysis method in including non-monetary criteria into the evaluation, a multi criteria decision analysis technique was used as a comprehensive evaluation tool for the comparison of the three power supply options that were compared economically using the life cycle cost analysis method. The multi criteria decision analysis technique takes into account, in the appraisal of any project, the monetised and non monetised impacts which sometimes can only be assessed in qualitative terms. using this technique, the option of PV systems got an overall score of 95. this figure was 34.25 and 13.54 for the options of grid extension and diesel generators respectively. Results of the analysis showed that, systems based on renewable energies are more suitable for electrifying the Libyan remote villages that are not connected and are far from the nearest electricity grid .
Solar energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources in the world. It is the most abundant, practically inexhaustible and the most environmentally friendly form of all energies. The most important is that technologies are available at present to convert this energy source into heat, and electricity. It is very clear that the Libyan energy sector is poorly managed and is unsustainable in addition to this the Libyan population density is very low owing to the large area of the country. this led to the problem of many remote villages are scattered in the country and located far from the national electricity grid letting them with no access to electricity. Solar energy in general and photovoltaic technology in particular were studied in this research. A standalone PV system was compared with other conventional power supply systems; diesel generator and the option of extending the national grid to decide for their suitability to electrify Libyan remote villages. Life cycle cost analysis was used to determine the unit electricity cost for the solar PV system with batteries as storage in addition to another two power systems suggested for the electrification of a Libyan remote village. These include a diesel generator system, and the option of extending the national electric grid. Results indicated that, in terms of unit electricity cost, the standalone PV system was cheapest of all followed by the option diesel generator. The most expensive was the grid extension option. The figures was 0.32$/kWh for the PV, 0.41$/kWh for the diesel generator and finally 0.79 for the option of grid extension.
