dc.descriptionThe enzootic cycle of B. burgdorferi involves both an Ixodes tick vector and a mammalian host, usually a small rodent (CDC, 20011; Levine, 1995). Humans are accidental hosts for B. burgdorferi and spirochetes from infected people generally are not transmitted to other hosts (Lane and Loye, 1991). The lifecycle of the Ixodes tick takes two years to complete (Figure 1); hard ticks consume three blood meals, one meal during each stage of their life (larvae, nymphs, and adults) (Nefedova et al., 2004). dc.description.abstractAmong the genes up-regulated as B. burgdorferi transitions between its tick vector and mammalian host is a two-gene operon encoding bb0728 and bb0729. bb0728 (or cdr) encodes a protein that has been characterized as a coenzyme A disulfide reductase (CoADR) and bb0729 has been annotated as a transporter from the dicarboxylate/amino acid:cation (Na+ or H+) symporter (daacs) family based on sequence similarities.
