dc.descriptionWeather information or meteorological data plays an important role in many areas of daily life that have a direct impact on human activities. They are used for the real-time preparation of weather analyses, forecasts and severe weather warnings and for research in meteorology and climatology [1]. The following are some important applications of meteorological data: 1- Agriculture is the first areas that benefited from the meteorological data. Every facet of agricultural activity depends on the weather, for example estimation of soil moisture, crop operations or forecasting of outbreak of crop diseases or insect pests is largely dependent on meteorological conditions. The evolution of weather forecasting of agriculture set aside a lot of risk. Also benefited animals husbandry. Real-time weather data may be input to expert systems, management models, or simple applications to support the decisions of the farmers [2]. 2- The establishment of a new forest, by seeding and planting or by natural means, depends on the proper sequence of weather events as they interact with soil conditions on the one hand and the plant material (seed, young seedlings) on the other. As the young forest grows, and the occurrence of destructive forest fires all depend on weather and climate. Added to this is the fact that when the trees are finally harvested, high temperature, wind, rain and/or snow may affect the efficiency or indeed even the possibility of cutting and removing the crop trees
dc.description.abstractThe aim of this thesis is to design an automatic digital portable weather station. Initially weather factors are identified and then the appropriate sensors are chosen, which must be compatible with the rest of the system. The core of the system is the data processing unit. In this study the microcontroller is used as data processing unit, this microcontroller is electrically programmable device, which has the advantage of small size and relatively inexpensive cost. In this study the PIC16F877 microcontroller is selected as the main part of the designed system. It has all, and more, the features required to the automatic weather station. The microcontroller receives the output signals of the sensors, which are analog signals, then converts them into digital signals by ADC. This data is processed to produce numerical data that represent the real values of weather factors and stored in the memory for later use. Moreover the data is displayed by using LabVIEW software. Such software has the advantages of displaying data or measurements, in the form of traditional dashboards. The PIC16F877 is programmed by PICBASIC language, which is similar to traditional BASIC language; simple, easy to learn, and the programs written by this language are easy to maintain and develop. All parts of weather station are assembled together and the microcontroller is loaded with the programs. The system is tested by the calibration unit of National Center for Meteorology and the readings are good and acceptable, according to the report adopted by the center
