Unlike MANETs, nodes ( i.e., vehicles) in VANETs characterized with high speed. High speed of nodes cause high topology changes which cause frequent link losses. Also high rise buildings, trees and different road topologies and etc cause unstable communication performances. These characteristics poses many challenging research issues. To meet the requirements of real time safety applications, the protocol stack of WAVE must possess low latency for disseminating safety critical messages, high throughput, scalability, and high fidelity against different propagation environments. To thoroughly study the performance of VANETs in this thesis we evaluate of IEEE 802.11p standard for VANETs under three different radio propagation model (Two-ray ground, Shadowing and Nakagami) based on two routing protocols (AODV and DSDV). To model a mobility that is closer to the mobility of vehicles, we use Vehicular Ad Hoc Network Mobility Simulator (VanetMobiSim) simulation tool. VanetMobiSim has build-in modules that can be configured to model different road types and moving schemes of vehicles.
Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET) is the subclass of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). VANET is one of the influencing areas for the improvement of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in order to provide safety and comfort to the road users. VANET assists vehicle drivers to communicate and to coordinate among themselves in order to avoid any critical situation through Vehicle to Vehicle communication e.g. road side accidents, traffic jams, speed control, free passage of emergency vehicles and unseen obstacles etc. Besides safety applications VANET also provide comfort applications to the road users. For example, weather information, internet access and other multimedia applications. The IEEE 802.11p protocol and the family of IEEE 1609 standards for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE) define an architecture and a complementary, standardized set of services and interfaces that collectively enable secure vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) wireless communications.
