southern Libya. For its high nutritional value, it is an important source of sugars, amino
acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Selenium is one of these minerals found in
the tissues of date fruits. It is an important mineral that the body needs and cannot
manufacture on its own, so it must be obtained from an external source. This study
included the determination of selenium in date samples, and 23 samples were collected
from 13 different regions in southern and western Libya. 0.5g of the dry sample was
weighed and transferred to Teflon tubes, 5ml of concentrated nitric acid was added to the
sample and digested in the microwave. After digestion, the sample was transferred to
polypropylene tubes, diluted with deionized water, and the absorbance values were read
using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer (FAAS). These steps were repeated
twice for each sample. The results showed that all samples contained a high concentration
of selenium, it ranged from 0.344ppm for Kakawiya (Tarhunah) to 2.419ppm
for Deglet Shemareikh (Waddan) samples.
