Several studies have shown that optical-fiber-based backhauling offers a future proof solution to handle rapidly increasing traffic in wireless access networks and outperforms other existing backhauling technologies, such as microwave and copper (coaxial cable), in terms of capacity, scalability, and sustainability. However, the deployment cost of fiber infrastructure is relatively high and it may be difficult to provide a cost efficient and flexible protection strategy for a fiber backhauling network. Considering that protection is very important to avoid service interruption in a high-capacity generation public network (GPN), the protection scheme in generation public network based on fiber and microwave partnership is the solution acts for solving that problem. The working path is established by fiber link, while the path protection is made via a microwave connection between two base stations in case high reliability performance is required [7]. Protection mechanisms are implemented to reduce the harm caused by failure of network components. Component failure may have various reasons.
Communication links (wire or wireless) are the vital backbone in any modern data transfer technology. For long distances as well as in-door network optical links are the most favorite due to its well known advantages. However in many applications especially for rurally and shadowed areas, a slave link is required to ensure data delivering to the require destination. Synchronization digital hierarchy (SDH) technique is a handy efficient technique that lends itself to be a unifying tool between two links working at different data transfer rate. In this work, a realization of the SDH technique has been achieved using two types of communication links [optical fiber and microwaves] that are integrated in path ring protection model. Results are quite consistent with the expectation and the system implementation is quite feasible.
