The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of the spot welding parameters on the mechanical properties of stainless steel sheets type 304 by using Taguchi technique. The focus is to optimize process parameters such as pressure, squeeze time, weld time and hold time. A plan of experiments based on Taguchi technique has been used to acquire the data, An Orthogonal array and signal to noise (S/N) ratio are employed to investigate the welding characteristics of butt joint and optimize the welding parameters. To find out percentage contribution of each input parameter for obtaining optimal conditions, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was used. The conformations tests have been carried out to compare the predicted values with the experimental values to confirm its effectiveness in the analysis of tensile shear strength. Analysis of variation was used to determine the most and least contribution of different parameters. The verification was done through the experimentation using optimized combination of levels for parameters. Tensile tests were performed using Zwick/Roell. type UTM machines to give accurate results. The optimal process parameters for prediction and experimental were found to be (8.17 and 8.21 KN) for tensile shear strength and (18.24 and 18.28) for signal to noise ratio were very close. The investigation proved the effectiveness of Taguchi method to enhance the quality of spot welded joint. Minitab being a powerful software package, has been implemented to carry out the entire optimization analysis. Finally the pressure parameter was found to be the major factor that has the highest contribution of about 86.4% for the stainless steel sheet type 304 with thickness of 1.5 mm following by weld time, hold time and finally squeeze time.
