Biomaterials are a diverse class of natural and synthetic materials designed to interact with living systems for medical or biological purposes. These materials are engineered to interface with living systems for diagnostic, therapeutic, augmentative, or regenerative applications. Biomaterials play a pivotal role in various medical applications, including implants, prostheses, tissue engineering scaffolds, drug delivery systems, and regenerative medicine. Their properties allow them to function effectively within biological environments while maintaining compatibility with living
Silica-based biomaterials such as glass are a unique type of inorganic system, including bioactive glasses and glass ceramics, mainly used in medical applications such as dentistry. However, a disadvantage of silicate bioactive glasses is their slow and incomplete conversion to fluorapatite (FA) when exposed to aqueous phosphate solutions, leading to the presence of unconverted silicate glass in the body for an extended period. Additionally, silicate-based bioglasses have limitations restricting their applications, including brittleness and low biodegradability.
