dc.descriptionSteel reheat furnaces are considered as major energy consuming units in the steel industry. These furnaces can use fuel oil as well as natural gas. In the Libyan Iron and Steel Company there are a number of these furnaces to reheat different steel charges. The slab reheat furnace in the Flat Rolling Mill was the subject of this study. A comprehensive mass and heat balance on the furnace was performed based on actual input and output data to the furnace. This data included steel heating rates, flow rates of fuel, combustion air and cooling water. Results of this work showed that the calculated thermal efficiency of the furnace is approximately 23%. This efficiency is considered to be low, and hence, it is recommended that the furnace should be subjected to maintenance and calibrations to improve its thermal efficiency
