Distance banking services- known also as Home Banking- from the early 1980s were the start of modern online banking. The term “online banking” became popular in late 1980s. Online services started in New York in 1981 when four of the city's major banks (Citibank, Chase Manhattan, Chemical and Manufacturers Hanover) offered home banking services using the videotex system. Because of the commercial failure of videotex these banking services never became popular except in France where the use of videotex (Minitel) was subsidized by the telecom provider and the UK, where the Prestel system was used. In the late 1990s, many banks began to view Web-based banking as a strategic imperative. The attraction of banks to online banking are fairly obvious: diminished transaction costs, easier integration of services, interactive marketing capabilities, and other benefits that boost customer lists and profit margins.
Electronic banking- also referred as Online banking, Internet banking, e-banking, virtual banking and by other terms is defined as the automated delivery of new and traditional banking products and services directly to customers through electronic, interactive communication channels. Electronic banking includes the systems that enable financial institution customers, individuals or businesses, to access accounts, transact business, or obtain information on financial products and services through a public or private network, including the Internet. Customers access electronic banking services using an intelligent electronic device, such as a personal computer (PC), personal digital assistant (PDA), automated teller machine (ATM), kiosk, or Touch Tone telephone. While the risks and controls are similar for the various electronic banking access channels, this thesis will focus specifically on Internet-based services due to the Internet’s widely accessible public network. Accordingly; the term “Internet Banking” will be used along this work. A narrower definition of Internet Banking subject of this work would be: Internet Banking is an electronic system that enables customers of a financial institution to conduct financial transactions on a website operated by the institution.
