Background and aim: Hepatitis B virus is one of the transfusions transmissible diseases. The African Region has a high prevalence of hepatitis B contamination. This relative investigation between ELISA and two rapid screening tests to evaluate their proficiency for the identification of hepatitis B infection (HBV). Methods: A total of 400 blood samples were collected from blood donors who attended central blood banks of Tripoli, Benghazi and Sebha during the period from March 2017 to August 2018, all samples investigated for the presence of HbsAg utilizing fully-automated immune analyzer and each sample retested utilizing two commercially rapid tests. Results: Of the 200 samples, 17(8.5%) tested positive and 183(91.5%) tested negative with ELISA method. Of a similar, every one of the 200 samples, 27(13.5%) tested positive and 173(86.5%) tested negative with rapid test I. Sensitivity, specificity of the surface antigen rapid test I was 70.6%, 91.8% respectively. On the other hand, of the other 200 samples, 35(17.5%) tested positive and 165(82.5%) tested negative with ELISA method, of a similar, every one of the 200 samples, 27(13.5%) tested positive and 173(86.5%) tested negative with rapid test II. Sensitivity, specificity of the surface antigen rapid test II was 42.9%, 92.7% respectively. Statistically there were significant differences between ELISA and two rapid tests
