The aim of this study was to develop clinically relevant animal models of obesity and T2D, and characterise changes in metabolic parameters, adipokine expression profile and nociceptive behavior with progression of diabetes and obesity.
The global epidemic of obesity is driving a large rise in type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its associated complications include peripheral diabetic neuropathy (PDN). While PDN has been extensively studied in animal models of type 1 diabetes, information is lacking on the underlying pathological mechanisms in T2D models, despite the fact that the vast majority of people with diabetes have T2D. It is hypothesised that factors contributing to the development of pain and sensory dysfunction in T2D patients may be linked with expansion of adipose tissue and an altered adipokine profile observed in obese T2D patients.
