Various types of Amalgams using( Porcelain dental powder products for dentures and crowns, contain feldspar minerals and some trace of different Alloys that might contains minuet amounts of naturally occurring , potassium and some heavy elements. It has to be noted that all oral tissues namely Gingiva, Mucosa, Bulp and Bones should not be affected by any dental amalgam materials to be used in dental Clinics. All used amalgam materials should be free from any toxic, radioactive, leachable or diffusible substances that could cause any harmful or ill effects on the circulatory system of the patients such as teratogenic or carcinogenic effects. Sex dental powder samples type commercial capsule type (Valliant PhD™ #1, Ivoclar Vivadent Inc., Amherst NY; were measured using two technologies namely ;Photospectrophotmetry(chemical analysis).Using this method , it has been found that these samples contained a high levels of Mercury and other heavy metals such as Cu- ( 53248±500), Zn- sample one (91.10±10) and sample 2 was (1789±200), Pb- (19±3.00) , and Fe- (8.10±1.0). However, the other detected element were As, Cd, Cr, V in the ranges of (0.005- 3.10) ± 0.50 in units of parts per million (ppm(.
The results of Gamma-ray spectrometry using High Purity Germanium Detectors(HPGe-d) connected to Gamma-ray spectroscopy is used to analyze the six samples amalgam for radioactivity contents.
The calculated dose rates for all samples were calculate, and ranged (0.0745 to 0.1821) µSv.hr-1 for Pb-210 and (0 .052 to 0.066) µSv.hr-1 for Pb-214. Using the net calculation software for uranium concentration which was in the range of ( 1.13 to 1.87) Bq.g-1. The highest dose rate was for sample A(0.59) and the lowest for sample B (0.36) µSv.hr-1. The measured activities were in the range of 0.16-0.23Bq.g-1 and the calculated dose rate of the dental amalgam was found to be in the range of 0.65 to 0.94 µSv.hr-1 in dental tissue. The highest activity and dose rate was found for sample E while the lowest was for sample C. For K-40 the measured range was found to be (10.39 to 11.09) Bq.g-1, the corresponding dose rates values was the lowest for sample A (0.47) and the highest value for sample E (0.051) in µSv.hr-1 . Finally, the calculated effective dose rates for the basal Mucosa from gamma-ray from the main natural radionuclides was in the range of 0.031-0.032µSv per hour. While, the calculated yearly effective dose equivalent was found to be (271 to 280) mSv per year, which is a considerable dose to the mucous of the mouth of the patient.
These detected levels may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of eveloping children and fetuses and even adult patients may be exposed to high levels of toxic and harmful element and radionuclides. These type of dental powders and others being used in most Libyan dental Centers and Clinics. There is a great need to establish Libyan standards for all types of dental powder materials and such studies to measure and scrutinized all types of harmful effect on Libyan Patients
