| dc.description | Results demonstrated the system’s sensitivity to both small and large leaks, highlighting its ability to accurately localize leaks and quantify their severity through (CSA) Cumulative Amplitude Spectrum comparisons. The analysis revealed a strong relationship between leak size, localization accuracy, and integrated signal values, affirming the radar’s capability to pinpoint leak positions with minimal error margins. The system effectively identified variations in signal patterns associated with different leak sizes, enabling precise differentiation between smaller and larger leaks. | |
| dc.description.abstract | The integrity and operational efficiency of fluid transport systems, including water distribution networks and oil and gas pipelines, are still facing significant challenges due to pipeline leak detection, localization, and quantification. Undetected leaks can result in significant resource losses, increased operational costs, and environmental hazards. This thesis introduces a practical and effective approach that utilizes Continuous Wave (CW) radar technology to detect leaks, localize them, and quantify them using vibration analysis. The study investigates the vibrational patterns induced by leaks, using a CW radar operating at 3.5 GHz to capture and process signals for real-time monitoring, leak localization, and severity estimation. A combination of simple yet effective signal processing techniques, including Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and integration analysis, was applied to characterize leak-induced anomalies. The experimental setup involved controlled leak scenarios in 1 inch diameter copper water pipes, featuring two leak sizes (2 mm and 4 mm) and measurement distances (0.5 m, 1 m, 1.5 m, and 2 m). Additional focus was given to evaluating signal attenuation and propagation behavior across varying distances, enabling the radar system to localize leaks accurately and quantify their severity based on amplitude variations. | |
