dc.descriptionWomen with GDM are at increased risk of persistent glucose intolerance after delivery, and yet, many are not retested postpartum. 22 (34.4%) of those tested in our study had T2DM. This showed that the prevalence of T2DM at early postpartum is high and the careful early postpartum follow up is highly recommended. In this study, according to our postpartum follow up of the patients for the result of postpartum OGTT. Rate of postpartum visit and postpartum glucose testing after GDM are low. Where the rate of converters is high, we emphasizing on the importance of patients’ education during pregnancy for the necessity of the self blood sugar monitoring throughout the pregnancy, postpartum care and glucose testing to reduce the rate of subsequent diabetes later in their live.
dc.description.abstractPregnancy induces progressive changes in maternal carbohydrate metabolic process. As pregnancy advances insulin resistance and diabetogenic stress due to placental contra-insulin hormones necessitate compensatory increase in insulin secretion. When this compensatory mechanism fails due to pancreatic β cells inadequacy gestational diabetes develops [1].
