الوصف
The relative influence of seed set production was also investigated. Two
petunia genotypes were used as twelve plants grown from cuttings in total. They were grown in
the glasshouse under room conditions at 22°C for a period of 16/8 hr in a supplementary lights
cycle, and then three plants of p, hybrida and three of p, inflata were transferred to a different
glasshouse room where they were exposed to high temperature ranging from 28°C to 34 °C in
order to acclimatise them before examining the high temperatures possible effects on both pollen
tube growth and seed set production. Pollen tubes growth was positively influenced by high
temperature during pollination, howeverno seed set produced. Reverse transcriptional PCR results
show that the S-RNases expression level is also affected by high temperature although small
sample size was used. Although a little evidence of the breakdown of GSI is provided by these
findings, the breakdown of GSI in both P. hybrida and P. inflata is achievable by high temperature,
in particular if larger project scale can be applied under more precise temperature conditions in
special growth rooms. These findings are also consistent with what is achieved in the past studies
with other plant species that are of GSI system control.
